Author's second book, a fantasy novel concerned with the nightmare of contemporary African-American existence, set "in an American of tomorrow" where he meets some of "the most messed-up people imaginable--the fear-ridden products of the Great Society." This material could only have been written by someone having extended, face-to-face experience with "messed-up people," and Wright's voice is both clearly original and chockablock full of the disjointed '60s writing styles that emerged as "Black Humor."

Meeting Ralph Steadman and his charming wife, Anna, here in Lexington, Kentucky, in July 1994, was a real treat. It has become apparent that the work of this prolific satirical illustrator deserves more attention in America (he is well-known in the U.K., of course). Many Americans are familiar primarily with Steadman's collaborations with Hunter Thompson. See Steadman Bibliography. Most Steadman books in this catalogue are in near fine or better condition

Contents are a suite of B&W caricatures of historic grotesques, oddities, impostors, and eccentrics, with accompanying text by Steadman. Subjects include Matthew Levitt (who crucified himself), Wybrand Lolkes (the Dutch dwarf), Claude Ambroise Seurat (the living skeleton), and Barbara Urselin (the hairy-faced lady). NOTE: These impressions were signed by HST on May 6, 1995 (Kentucky Derby Day), the 25th anniv. of the first Thompson / Steadman collaboration to cover the Derby in 1970.
