GONZO WITH THE WIND

In summer 1997, TGTH received it's first local review from FFWD, a local arts paper under it's webwatch section, touting TGTH as the source for gonzo (I didn't get a copy, I was out of town.) Now a summer later we have our first national review in Screw #1528, one of the few surviving newspapers from the new journalism heyday. I could say some mushy words here, but I won't. TGTH would be nothing without the dedicated support of fiends everywhere - gonzo fiends are the best kind of friends to have.

The reviews are in and it seems that critics and fans alike are split on the impact, perspective and quality of Terry Gilliam's big-screen adaptation of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. (Personally, we loved it, finding it to be a funny and faithful, if somewhat flawed interpretation of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson's greatest novel.) But Thompson's fans are much more interesting than his critics, and if you find yourself among the former, make your way over to The Great Thompson Hunt (www.tekknowledge.com/index.html).

The site is definitely fan-oriented and as such includes a wealth of information and memorabilia, divided into several sections: Books, Pictures, Friends, Roads, Articles & Essays and Fun. Whoever maintains this Webpage has certainly done their homework; the Books section alone is quite a sight, featuring covers from different editions of Thompson's books as well as some rare collector's items, like the legendary Screwjack chapbook, Mistah Leary...He Dead, Thompson's obituary for Timothy Leary and information about but unfortunately not a transcription of, Thompson's own screenplay for Where The Buffalo Roam [hey, if someone wants to buy it for me, I would!]. The bibliography section is a bit lacking, whichi s understandable considering the wealth of info out there.

The list of Thompson's television appearanecs is also a valuable resource for the gonzo completist, chronicling his lifelong media blitz from his appearance on Who Do You Trust? (Thompson missed the question for "Who invented penicillin?") through last year's bang-up guest shot on Late Night with Conan O'Brien. Transcripts from a few of HST's interviews are included, too, from his AOL chat and The Charlie Rose Show.

The site's photo gallery is a real hoot, reproducing shots of Thompson working at his Woody Creek spread, psoing with Johnny Depp and Phoebe Leger and hard at work at the Mitchell Brothers' O'Farrell Theater in Frisco. And once you've hit all the sections this site has to offer, you can take advantage of the links it maintains to other Webpages.

If Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (the film, not the book) leaves you looking for more or better entree into the world of this twisted American icon, this site is a fun and intriguing place to visit.
